Since 2014, we have worked with many local primary and secondary schools to provide children with the opportunity to experience the fantastic music provided by young musicians and their internationally renowned mentors in the glorious setting of Hellens Manor.
This year we have been fortunate to have been able to work with eight schools, developing their composition skills through instrumental and vocal workshops. Funding from Hellensmusic’s sponsors allowed us to deliver preparatory workshops in schools before inviting over 120 children to partake in a day-long workshop at the festival.
Using stories from the history of Hellens Manor and a double bass sonata as inspiration, this year’s workshops were based around the theme of “different”. The children were thrilled to visit Hetty Walwyn’s bedroom and learn more about her ghostly story as well as hear the fantastic Waldemar Schwiertz perform the Gubaidulina bass sonata. Some schools were also able to work with some of the girls from Hereford Cathedral School’s choir Cantabile.
” It was one of those wonderful musical occasions where each of the children in all their glorious range of abilities could participate and benefit from the day.” Class teacher
“The master-class was incredible and I could have stayed in there for the whole day.” Year 5 child
